Local journalist Lakpasange Sherpa associated with the Blast Times and Sankhuwasabha Post, was manhandled by one Kishor Shrestha who posed as a Maoist leader, at Sindhua Bazaar of Sankhuwasabha, an eastern district of Nepal, on 27 August.

Media Situation Worst during King's Rule: Nepal Report

The situation of press freedom in Nepal during the period of direct rule of the king was the worst. According to the 'State of media freedom: Nepal Report 2062' published by Freedom Forum on Sunday, there were 318 cases of short and long-term detention, 418 cases of manhandling, misbehaviour and beating and 33 cases of threats in between April 14, 2005 to April 24, 2006.

Nepalese media faces more attacks, threats

Despite a historic year for Nepali politics, the country's media still faces significant harassment and obstruction, says a report issued by Freedom Forum today. During the period from 25 April 2006 to 14 April 2007, there were 32 recorded attacks on journalists, compared to 18 in the same period in 2005-2006, according to the report. Appellate Court Issues Softer Ruling on a Journalist’s Plea

A Nepalese appellate court on Tuesday (September 12, 2006) revoked a lower court verdict that dismissed a journalist’s plea for compensation against what he claimed as torture during police custody. Journalist Shyam Kumar Shrestha, editor of a Nepali language monthly magazine, Mulyankan, had filed a suit against the government, demanding compensation for the torture inflicted during a custodial phase.
