Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subas Nembang has underlined the need for all the parties to move forward for the completion of the peace process and constitution writing. Speaking at the concluding session of the two-day First Convention on Right to Information organised by Freedom Forum, Nepal here today, Nembang pointed out the need for shortening the transition in the country.

SAARC countries form advisory group on RTI PDF Print E-mail

A common forum of the experts on right to information (RTI) from all eight countries of the SAARC has been formed in Kathmandu on Tuesday in a bid to formulate an act on RTI, implement the existing laws and create public awareness in the grassroots level on RTI.

At a closing ceremony of the two-day national convention on RTI organized by the Freedom Forum, an advisory group on RTI was declared. The group comprises 16 members from the parliamentarian, RTI officers, media persons, academicians and representatives of civil society from all 8 countries of the region.

Chairman of the Freedom Forum, Taranath Dahal, World Bank representative Bikram Chand and Chief of the Information Commission of Bangladesh, Muhammad Jamir shed light on the objectives of the group.

The group will meet twice a year and create massive awareness writing features, articles, interviews and others o RTI.The RTI is a tool for democracy, and the rights of the people and country, said Chief information Commissioner of Nepal, Vinay Kasajoo
 

 
1st National Convention on RTI Concluded Adopting Kathmandu Declaration PDF Print E-mail

2-day 1st national convention on Right to Information concluded adopting Kathmandu declaration on 29 March 2011. Chairperson of constituent assembly honourable, Subash Chandra Nembang was the chief guest of closing ceremony of the convention. The declaration has suggested clear cut recommendations to different sectors including government, political parties, constituent assembly, CSOs and Media about the way forward to ensure enabling environment for effective practices of RTI in Nepal. Convention had been inagurated by honourable President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav on 28 March.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav Inaugurates National Convention on Right to Information PDF Print E-mail

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav inaugurated the historic first National Convention on the Right to Information (RTI) organized by the Freedom Forum-Nepal in collaboration with the World Bank, in Kathmandu on March 28.

On the occasion, President Dr Yadav said all sides be aware and put pressure on the concerned bodies to the implementation of RTI in the country. He also urged all to build information culture which would obviously help make peace process successful and write constitution on time.

President Dr Yadav thanked Freedom Forum for organizing such an event to sensitize the state and non-state actors on the issue of access to information and wished the convention will contribute to strengthen democratic values.

Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Information and Communication Krishna Bahadur Mahara lauded the initiative and urged all concerned sides to enable both demand and supply sides of information in order to fully implement the RTI in Nepal.

Chairman of the Freedom Forum delivered welcome speech. Saying that the RTI is the oxygen of democracy, Chairman Dahal said the Convention was organized to discuss extensively the RTI issues in south Asia, share experiences and make concerted efforts to make the issue of access to information a common agenda of South Asian nations. He added that it finally helps enable the grassroots people with the use of RTI. Moreover, he informed that the two-day convention will be concluded by adopting Kathmandu declaration on RTI.

As many as 200 participants including the representatives of executive, legislature, judiciary, civil society organizations, media professionals, development activists, legal practitioners and rights activists are actively participating in the convention.

Six working papers have been presented so far in the convention.It is believed that the Convention will help create massive wave in the sector RTI across the country and the region as well.
